Looking for inspiration for a home update? Three blogging friends and I are launching a fun August series called Makeover in a Month. Each Friday in August we’ll reveal a new phase of our makeovers. My project focuses on the basement bathroom.
My goal is to take this space from dated and drab to charming cottage style over the next three weeks, while keeping much of what already exists. I want to create a fresh, spunky look without a full demolition—simple, budget-friendly changes that most people can tackle themselves.

You’ll see other participants’ first updates today; some may already be underway. I admire those who start early and stay organized, but I tend to move at my own pace—so my first project will begin in the next few days and I’ll share that update next Friday.
Today I’m sharing the bathroom mood board so you can see the direction I’m headed. This board is the main inspiration, though I may tweak ideas as the project unfolds. It’s a simple makeover in that I’m avoiding a full remodel: instead I’ll focus on straightforward upgrades that quickly change the room’s character.
Planned updates include new, charming lighting, swapping faucets, and painting the walls and existing vanity. I may add a stenciled accent to bring extra personality—no guarantees on how ambitious that will be, but I’m excited to try. These kinds of small improvements can have a big impact and are often more achievable than a complete overhaul.
We could replace the vanity and countertop for a totally new look, and that remains an option for the future. For now, we’ll keep the current vanity, shower tile, and floor—these are good-quality elements that don’t need replacing and will work well with the new finishes and fixtures.
While the plan feels straightforward, there’s still plenty to do. I’m curious to see how much transformation we can accomplish in a short time. I’ve avoided One Room Challenge-style timelines before because they felt like too much pressure, but this collaboration feels manageable and fun.
Each of the four participants will post updates every Friday. In three weeks, we’ll share final posts showing completed projects. I’ll document this bathroom’s transformation from its current state through to the reveal scheduled for the final Friday in August.
Ready to get inspired and maybe tackle a few projects at home this month? Let’s go!
