Right before Christmas I wrote about the value of having something to look forward to in January to lift your spirits. You can read that earlier post on the idea of starting a new home project to refresh your mood.
With 2021 drawing to a close, now is the perfect time to choose a simple, uplifting goal to focus on in January.
A long, dark winter can feel heavy after the holidays. Choosing a home project—big or small—or planning enjoyable experiences at home can make a real difference in how you feel day to day.
I thought it would be fun to turn this into a community challenge, so I created a plan we can all try together. Instead of making broad resolutions for the year, let’s pick a single, achievable goal to focus on during January.
A LOVELY JANUARY

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
Choose one room to focus on during January and make it your January home goal.
Your goal might be to clean, organize, redecorate, paint, or update the lighting, furniture, or accessories. You could plan small DIYs, try a new arrangement, or simply spend time imagining possibilities for the space.
Anything that encourages creativity and gives you something to look forward to will brighten the month and your home.
Which room will you choose? What ideas do you have for making that space more enjoyable?
I’ll be working on our bedroom. My aim is to experiment, make steady progress, and enjoy the process. Simple changes can lift your spirits without being complicated or costly.
Once you pick a space, share what you plan to do and post updates throughout January. Share in our Facebook community or use the hashtag #alovelyjanuary on social media. Tag @theinspiredroom if you like, and I’ll reshare some of your posts.
Invite friends and neighbors to join. Doing this together makes it more fun and encouraging—and it’s comforting to know you’re not doing it alone.
I’ll share updates here on the blog and on social media so you can follow my progress and see what inspires me. I’ll post my ideas, the items I choose, and small steps I take to refresh the room.
Instead of a dark and dreary January, let’s make it a lovely one.
Update: I later shared my bedroom plans, the lantern ceiling light I ordered, and the updates I made to create a cozy winter sanctuary. Look for those posts on the blog for more details and photos of the completed changes.
