What’s your decorating style? Do you feel at home where you live? If you feel unsure about your style or the next decorating steps, you’re not alone. Many people feel stuck when their current decor doesn’t reflect them, when their home wasn’t designed with their tastes in mind, or when updating a room or the entire house feels overwhelming. With so many ideas online, it’s easy to be confused about which direction to take.
How can you discover your style amid so many options? What if your home’s existing style or your budget feels limiting?
Here’s the truth: finding an authentic style takes time, patience and a bit of experimentation.
You don’t need a perfectly designed home to feel at home. There are ways to be comfortable with what you have now while you plan future changes. Living in a space and observing how it feels throughout the year helps you make better, longer-lasting decisions.
If you’ve just moved in or are new to decorating, give yourself time to learn your home’s personality and quirks. When you understand a house, you can highlight the features you love and find affordable ways to minimize or fix what you don’t. I recommend living in a home for at least four seasons before making major, permanent changes—unless the home is unlivable and needs immediate work. Time helps you see how light, temperature and daily use affect each space, which informs smarter choices for remodeling and big purchases.
Rushing can lead to impulse decisions that may satisfy you short-term but might not hold up over time. With observation and patience you may find that things you once wanted to change are fine as-is or can be improved with small tweaks. Once you learn how you live in the house and how the home feels in different seasons, you’ll decorate with more confidence.
Collecting ideas over time lets you narrow options to those that truly resonate and fit your budget, lifestyle and the house’s character. Avoid trying to replicate a single inspiration photo exactly. Instead, draw from many sources so your style becomes yours, not a copy of someone else’s.

When I’m unsure about style, collecting photos of rooms or details I love helps. The images in this post came from one of my favorite shops for furnishings and inspiration. I rarely make permanent or expensive changes based on a single photo; instead I blend ideas from many places so my home reflects a mix I truly love.

Finding a style can be slow, but it’s worth striving for a home that feels authentic and comfortable. Sometimes making one thoughtful decision is enough to set the direction. For example, a kitchen remodel we did years ago continues to inspire other choices in our house. Small, confident steps often lead to more progress.
Don’t let others dictate what your home should be. It’s helpful to seek trusted opinions—especially for historic homes that need preservation—but ultimately you should listen to your own voice. Your home should reflect who you are and how you live.
It’s also okay to make mistakes. Most decorating errors are reversible or become part of your home’s character. Sometimes a choice that seems wrong helps you understand what you don’t want, which is just as valuable.
You’ll feel truly at home with your style only after you get to know yourself and your home better. That takes time, but it’s part of the journey to creating a space you love.

How cute is this bench? You can customize the fabric—there are many lovely options. I especially like the toile pattern.
