Low-Maintenance Houseplants That Thrive Without Killing

Do you struggle to keep plants alive? I used to, too. Over time I learned a few care tips, but sometimes life – pets, low light, or a busy schedule – makes real plants impractical. That’s when artificial plants have saved the day. Modern faux plants are incredibly realistic and can instantly bring life and warmth to any room without the upkeep.

Plants add texture, color, and a lived-in feeling to a home. When real plants are feasible, I prefer them for their health benefits and air-purifying qualities. Still, there are plenty of situations where faux greenery is the smarter choice: a shadowy corner with no natural light, a high shelf you forget to water, a busy household, or a curious pet that likes to nibble on leaves.

We have a dog, Jack, who eats anything near his mouth, so delicate or low pots were never safe. For a tucked-away nook where I know I’ll forget to water, I use artificial maidenhair ferns. They give the lush, green look I want without the stress of keeping them alive or worrying about fallen leaves. Faux plants let you enjoy the aesthetic benefits of greenery without constant care.

Right now we’re still settling in and planning a remodel, so I’m holding off on investing heavily in live plants until I know where they’ll go and what conditions they’ll need. In the meantime, faux plants are a flexible and attractive option. Use one, two, or a group of three—artificial plants add life, scale, and color to a space with zero maintenance.

There are so many convincing faux plant options available—below are several I own and recommend, shown in photos from my home.
