Cozy fall pillows can transform a room from summer to autumn in an instant. The trick is handling the storage of off-season pillows—especially in a small home. This past summer I decided to tackle my overflowing pillow collection once and for all; the clutter had become impossible to ignore and my husband had started giving me those “really?” looks every time another pillow arrived.

Hi, I’m Melissa, and yes—I really like pillows.

If you prefer a minimalist, streamlined space, seasonal pillows might not appeal to you. For many of us, though, swapping in cable-knit pillows for fall, velvet for winter, and bright patterned covers for spring brings a lot of warmth and personality to a home. They can genuinely make a space feel renewed each season.

For years I intended to pare down my pillow stash, but the pile only seemed to grow. With limited storage in our house, I finally committed to decluttering and making better choices about what to keep.

My first step was assessing quality. I prefer firm, squishable down-like inserts—not flat, floppy, or foam ones. For someone who can be indecisive, I’m surprisingly particular about pillow feel. If a pillow didn’t meet my standard, it went into the donate pile.

A note on pillow forms: I favor heavyweight feather-and-down inserts that give pillows a full, plush look. Buy inserts slightly larger than the covers—usually a size or two up—so the pillows stay fluffy. If you already have covers with zippers, you can swap inserts as needed and store only the covers between seasons.

After sorting by quality, I matched inserts to covers to ensure the right fill for each size and style. Covers that I loved but that contained flat inserts were kept, and the old inserts were donated. I also kept versatile pillows that work across multiple seasons so I wouldn’t need to store as many extras.

The Inspired Room Pillow Basket

Love Is Patient art above a pillow basket.

A simple basket has long been my go-to for everyday pillow management. Keep a large basket in the bedroom or living area to hold accent pillows when you make the bed or to store sleeping pillows during the day. It’s an easy, attractive solution for daily use.

For seasonal storage, my favorite strategy is to keep a single set of high-quality inserts on the furniture year-round and switch out only the covers each season. Storing covers instead of full pillows saves a lot of space. When shopping, look for cushion covers with zippers or removable inserts—this makes swapping and storing far easier.

After paring down, I ended up with fewer but better pillows: inserts I enjoy, covers I love, and a manageable system for changing looks with the seasons. The result is a tidier home and the joy of seasonal refreshes without the storage headache.
