As we decorate our new house, I keep returning to a few basic principles that make a home feel warm and inviting. Whether this is your first home or your seventh, I believe every home benefits from three decorating essentials: authenticity, personality and flexibility. These guide choices that feel right for your life and help you make smart purchases, even on a modest budget.

First and foremost, your home should be authentic to you and your family.
Authenticity means your home reflects what matters to you right now. When you start from that place, it becomes much easier to decide where to invest your hard-earned money. You don’t need to sacrifice style to be authentic — you can create a layered, well-curated look over time without overspending.
Consider the people and pets who share your home. Do you have young children or animals? Do you work from home? We have two dogs, so part of our current style is making the house pet-friendly. We add comfortable dog beds in several rooms and choose fabrics and finishes that stand up to daily life while fitting the overall look of our space.
I found an adorable dog bed at Ross that had a fabric pattern I loved and that our pups instantly took to. It was an easy decorating win and a great price, so it felt smart and stylish. Stores like Ross make it possible to save on recognizable brands, which helps when you’re decorating on a budget.
Authenticity never goes out of style, and with thoughtful choices you can build a beautiful home one piece at a time.
Secondly, your home should show off your personality.
You’ll enjoy your home most when it reflects who you are. Think about the colors and patterns that lift your mood and the objects that tell your story. While hand-me-downs and practical finds are budget-friendly, it’s worth adding pieces you truly love alongside more functional items so the space feels uniquely yours.

Choose accessories that spark memories or reflect past experiences. I found three glass floats that reminded me of my childhood and our life near the water; they now live on a shelf and instantly make the room feel coastal and personal. Small accents like these quietly communicate your story and bring joy whenever you see them.
Ask yourself what pieces make you smile or connect you to meaningful places and moments. Those are the items worth including so your space feels inspiring every day.

Lastly, incorporate items that offer flexibility.
Choose furniture and accessories that can adapt to different needs and spaces. Over a lifetime you’ll move, change rooms and shift priorities, so versatile pieces help you get more use from every purchase. This is especially important in smaller spaces where multifunctional items save both money and square footage.

I’m a big fan of hooks: they’re stylish, inexpensive and easy to install, and they add a lot of function. In rooms without ample closet space, a few well-placed hooks can make life simpler. We installed a row of six cute hooks in our tiny guest room so visitors can hang purses, coats or overnight bags. Hooks keep belongings off the floor and out of the reach of our pups while helping guests feel organized.

Invest in classic staples that move easily from room to room. My bamboo-style nesting tables are a perfect example: they nest together to save space, then separate to serve as side tables, plant stands, or places to set coffee while entertaining. Small, flexible pieces like this become reliable and timeless parts of your home.

My home is still evolving and I look forward to sharing more of the progress. Thanks for following along as we create a comfortable, authentic space.
Tell me about your authentic style in the comments — I’d love to hear from you!
