One of my favorite ways to welcome fall is to return to nightly rituals—or to create new ones. Each season I keep different routines, and fall is the time I most enjoy returning to comforting patterns. Slowing down into a familiar rhythm makes me happy and helps me feel grounded for the day ahead.
These practices are usually simple habits that support how I want to feel in this season. Still, even knowing they’re helpful doesn’t always make them automatic. I have to be intentional and set myself up to follow through.
As I mentioned in a recent post about gratitude, success in our morning intentions often starts the night before. Preparing thoughtfully in the evening helps you wake up ready to act on your plans instead of scrambling.
Several readers asked how I set morning intentions, and I plan to share more specifics soon. For now, here are practical evening rituals that help you rest better and make morning routines smoother.
If mornings feel chaotic—whether you have children, a job, or just wish you could feel more composed—this excerpt from my book Dwelling may be useful. Creating more order in the evening brings more peace, helps you sleep better, and allows you to begin the next day with intention.
For anyone heading into cooler months, taking small steps to feel well—physically, mentally, and emotionally—matters. We can’t control everything, but many thoughtful changes will improve how we experience each day. I love designing better days for myself, and I hope these suggestions and the ideas in Dwelling inspire you too.

4 Ways to Treat Yourself Kindlier in the Evenings:
1. Focus on your essentials. Avoid filling your night with an endless task list. Instead, choose a few key actions that prevent morning chaos and complete them the night before.
Consider evening rituals as acts of self-care—small gestures to your future self so you wake up feeling cared for.
- Lay out your outfit for the next day, including undergarments, shoes, and accessories.
- Set out a clean towel for your shower so you don’t have to search for one in the morning chill.
- Place cozy slippers by the bed, and pack a lunch while preparing the kids’ lunches.
- Pre-measure coffee and set the machine up so it’s ready in the morning.
- Fill a water bottle and set it by your bedside so hydration is the first thing available when you wake up.
2. Reset your kitchen. Do a quick after-dinner tidy to prevent a pileup that will stress you the next day. Waking to dishes with dried food is demoralizing; if you can’t clean right away, ask household members to help or serve dinner slightly earlier to give yourself time to tidy up.
3. Prepare a peaceful mood. Clear your nightstand of clutter, pick up laundry or other items that disturb the calm of your bedroom, and turn on soft lamps at dusk to create a gentle, restful atmosphere.
4. Put your mind at ease. Offload tomorrow’s to-dos early in the evening by writing plans and reminders down so your mind can rest. Make a soothing evening routine: brew a calming tea, avoid stress-inducing TV, and skip social media in favor of reading, quiet, or relaxing music. Experts advise stopping screen use an hour before bed because blue light can affect sleep quality. Keep work and tense conversations out of the bedroom so it remains a place of calm.

Bonus tip:
Choose an aroma that feels peaceful and cozy in the evening. I like using a diffuser with soothing essential oils to set a calm tone. Lately I’ve combined a few drops of grounding and calming blends—together they create a woodsy, slightly sweet, and citrusy fragrance that signals rest to my brain. The scent helps me feel calmer the moment the diffuser starts.
