Hygge: Create a Cozy Winter Home Retreat

Hygge & A Cozy Winter House

Long before I first encountered the Danish idea of Hygge (pronounced HOO-gah) — the simple practice of cultivating a cozy home and savoring small pleasures for well-being — I was already drawn to those same habits. When I learned the name for it, it felt like a perfect fit: creating warmth, comfort and atmosphere through everyday rituals is exactly how I like to live. I often imagine I would feel right at home in Denmark.

Each year my home goals circle back to increasing comfort and a sense of well-being at home. After a long season of remodeling, I’m always relieved to move from construction chaos to a quieter, cozier phase. Renovations can be exciting, but they are rarely the most comfortable time to live in a space. Even with a running list of projects I hope to tackle (don’t we all have one?), I’m eagerly anticipating a stretch of simple home life — enjoying rituals, soft lighting and the little comforts that make everyday living feel restful.

I’m genuinely excited about how close we are to fully enjoying the comforts we’ve been working toward. When a space finally feels settled, it becomes easier to embrace quiet evenings, meaningful routines and a calmer pace.

Hygge & A Cozy Winter House

The truth is, coziness doesn’t happen by accident. If you don’t intentionally welcome comfort as a gift of the season, it’s easy to let winter pass without adopting the small rituals that make it restorative. In my book I wrote about choosing the kind of home you want; the same applies to seasonal living — it takes thought and practice to create habitual warmth and calm.

After the holidays, it’s tempting to slip into a slump and wish for spring. Or we may let winter’s chill and shorter days dampen our spirits instead of leaning into the benefits of a cozy home. Small, distracted habits like mindless scrolling in the evening replace more nourishing routines: curling up with a good book, wrapping yourself in a soft throw, or sharing a quiet moment with family.

We can miss simple opportunities for coziness all too easily. Instead of enjoying the ambience of a crackling fire, candlelight or twinkling lights that brighten the dark evenings, we may spend nights lit only by a television or computer screen. Choosing to add small lights, layered textures and comforting scents turns ordinary winter evenings into something restorative.

Over the coming weeks I’ll share more about the rituals and practical ways to create a cozy winter home. For now, consider keeping some of the holiday lights up a little longer. Light candles or a fire when you can. Put down your phone, change into your favorite pajamas, and nestle in with the people you love. These small actions help winter feel less like a season to endure and more like a time to savor.

If you enjoy seasonal homemaking ideas, you’ll find many cozy home tips and simple rituals in my books and previous posts. Embracing Hygge doesn’t require a major overhaul — just intention, a few comforts, and the willingness to slow down and enjoy the quiet moments at home.
