Kylee’s Home Updates: Stylish Ways to Reuse Hand-Me-Downs

Kylee here with some house updates! My parents recently downsized and moved in with my grandparents, so they pared down their furniture and decor. I was fortunate to receive several beautiful pieces—perfect timing as we settle into our new home. I wanted to show where some of those hand-me-downs have found a place in our house so far.

To start, these copper planters and the hanging door basket are now at my front door. The exact basket is out of stock, but there are similar options available. I love the warm copper tones—especially against the fall colors in our yard—and they’ll be fun to switch up each season.

Next is the dining set: my parents’ table and chairs along with the banquette bench. That table actually belonged to my grandparents before my parents—it’s been part of our family for years and has moved from home to home. So many memories have been made around it, and I’m thrilled it will continue to be part of our family gatherings. I also took a small hanging bell/candle holder from my mom’s house, which adds a charming touch in the corner.

I adore this blue-and-white lamp—now I have two pairs and I’m still deciding on final placements. The dresser shown was my mom’s, a vintage piece she refinished (you can see the paint color she used in her before-and-after post). The rug came from my grandparents during their downsizing, and the pillow Leo is cuddling with also came from my parents’ home.

This buffet cabinet now lives in my dining room and is storing entertaining items; it previously belonged to my mom. I love how the rooms are coming together. I’ve always favored a collected-over-time look, and mixing my mom’s classic pieces with items we already owned creates exactly that vibe. Many of these pieces were chosen without a clear plan for where they would go, but it’s been fun to experiment and discover how well they fit—often better than if I had picked them myself. My mom’s timeless taste certainly helps.

If you don’t have family hand-me-downs, I highly recommend checking Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist for secondhand finds. It takes patience, but you can uncover great pieces at excellent prices. My approach lately has been: if you love it, grab it, then find a place for it—or resell it if it doesn’t work.

I shared a few more items on my mom’s Instagram stories recently. If you missed them, you can view the stories on Instagram. I’ll keep posting updates there and on my own Instagram if you’d like to follow along—I’d love the company!
