You’ve probably heard me talk about using texture to make a home feel cozy for fall. Many readers ask what I mean by “texture” and how to introduce it thoughtfully. In this article I’ll share designer tips for adding layered texture so your space feels warm and inviting through fall, winter, and into spring.

I recommend combining a variety of coordinated patterns and materials so the room feels intentional without being busy. Recently I discovered several pillows from Arhaus that embody the kind of quality and texture I look for. Their pieces often emphasize craftsmanship, sustainable materials, and timeless design.
When choosing pillows I opt for a substantial insert—down when possible—and a removable cover in a tactile fabric and classic pattern. A well-made pillow will stay in your home for years and continues to add both comfort and visual interest.

Layering different organic and contrasting textures instantly elevates a room. For fall I favor heavier textiles and materials: chunky knit throws, nubby pillows, woven baskets, textured poufs, and sculptural accessories. Each item should bring a distinct surface quality so the overall composition feels rich and varied.
To make each piece stand out, look for thoughtful details—tassels, visible stitching, embroidered motifs, or mixed patterns on a single item. Those little accents amplify the tactile appeal and make a simple accessory feel more considered.
Textures work beautifully in many color palettes, but I’m drawn to muted organic tones—soft blues, warm grays, sage greens, off-whites, and deep blacks—paired with natural wood and metal finishes. Those hues create a calm backdrop that highlights texture instead of competing with it.

A pouf is a great example of a small piece that can deliver a lot of texture. The one pictured blends pattern and tactile materials, and it’s sturdy enough for extra seating, a footrest, or a place to set books beside the couch. Functional pieces that look and feel good are always winners.

This navy striped basket shows how color, weave, and utility combine to enhance a room. Beyond its appearance, a basket should feel pleasant to touch—soft yet structured—and offer storage for throws, magazines, or projects. Texture should invite use as much as it invites the eye.

Accessories can be a feast of texture. I love a simple arrangement of organic rattan balls in a basket with leather handles—small details like these make a vignette feel curated and tactile.

Artwork and wall hangings offer another opportunity to introduce warmth through surface. The botanical prints shown here are printed on handmade paper; the paper’s delicate texture provides enough presence that no frame is needed. Choosing art with a tactile quality can soften a wall and quiet a room without overwhelming it.

Subtle textures make a style statement without shouting. They change how you experience a room—inviting touch, encouraging lingering, and creating a sense of comfort.

Pets often add the coziest texture of all. Jack certainly thinks so—he brings personality and softness to any space. If you don’t have a furry companion, thoughtful choices in textiles and accessories can achieve the same welcoming effect.

Below is a collage of pieces I found at Arhaus that work beautifully together. Each item stands on its own but also contributes to a layered, cozy atmosphere when combined.
