Harnessing Good Clutter: Smart Strategies to Manage Your Stuff

Lately I’ve been thinking about the things I keep around the house. I’m not a minimalist, and I don’t pretend to be. Some possessions are worth keeping. While I don’t want to collect or hoard unnecessarily, I do enjoy being surrounded by beautiful objects — color, books, artwork, and patterns that add personality and warmth. I like items that bring meaning and a little joy to everyday life.

I also value space and balance. Rooms need breathing room so the objects you love can stand out, but too much emptiness can make a home feel stark and lifeless. A lack of color or pattern sometimes reads as a missed chance to express creativity or notice small, everyday beauty.

Of course, filling every surface with things makes a space feel cluttered and chaotic. That’s not the goal. Instead, I prefer a bit of joyful clutter — thoughtfully chosen pieces that reflect who I am without overwhelming the room. Not everyone prefers this approach, and that’s fine. We each have the freedom to decide how we want our homes to look and feel.

I’ve been writing several posts about organizing and reducing clutter, and drafting these pieces has helped me clarify what’s important in my home. I’m sorting the good pieces from the not-so-useful ones and deciding how to keep my living space free of unnecessary clutter while staying happily filled with things that matter and make me smile. In that spirit, I also shared a piece about “stuff” over at (in)courage.
