Thanks to Lowe’s for their support and installation of the floors in this home improvement project!
TThis weekend brought an exciting milestone for our house: the long-awaited wood floor project finally began. If you’ve been following our updates, you might remember I mentioned this plan a while ago.
On Saturday the old carpet was removed from the upstairs hall, master bedroom, staircase, living room and dining room. It felt like a big step forward — finally seeing the spaces stripped down and ready for their next phase.

There’s something oddly satisfying about removing things you’ve grown tired of. Even before the new floors are in, the house already feels brighter and fresher. I’m honestly giddy — it’s amazing to watch this home transform into what we’ve imagined for years.
After the kitchen makeover earlier this year, this is the next big improvement, and the house is a happy kind of chaos while the work is underway.
We’d been thinking about these changes for three and a half years, so finally seeing actual progress feels like a dream. I’m trying not to jinx it — but I haven’t been this excited about a project in a long time.

Instead of attempting the full renovation ourselves, we decided to have Lowe’s handle the job from tear-out through installation. Bringing in professionals removed the stress and the time commitment of doing it as a DIY project, which suits our busy schedules and limited renovation experience.
The installers applied Kilz primer to the subfloors in the upstairs hall and master bedroom before laying the hardwood. That step seals any lingering odors or stains that could have soaked into the subfloor over the years, especially from past pet mishaps. Seeing the white primer made me briefly consider leaving painted subfloors in a room — they can look unexpectedly charming — but for continuity we’ll proceed with the wood.
Working with Lowe’s has sped things up considerably. Small home projects tend to stretch on forever when life and indecision get in the way, so it’s refreshing to have a change that will happen quickly and with professional care. It’s exciting to think our house will feel completely different in just a few days once the new flooring is installed.
Update: We chose pre-finished solid Hickory flooring with an interlocking installation system. It’s the same hardwood we used in the kitchen and entry, and I absolutely love the look and texture. I’ll share more photos and details after the installers finish the next phase so you can see the transformation as it progresses.
