I receive many remodeling questions from readers, so today I’m sharing practical tips for redesigning a kitchen.
1) Take your time!
Use photos and inspiration as a starting point, but resist making big decisions on impulse. Some changes are easy to reverse, but others—like a bold paint color or an elaborate finish—can be harder to live with than you expect. Pause, collect ideas, and test things where possible before committing.
2) Decide wisely.
Don’t let every online trend or stray piece of advice push you away from practical choices. Trends come and go; focus on research and select materials, layouts, and finishes that fit your lifestyle and the character of your home. Thoughtful choices will keep your kitchen functional and appealing for years, and you can always update smaller elements later.
3) Dark kitchens get dirty, too.
All kitchens show wear and grime over time regardless of color. Dark finishes hide some marks and show others; the same is true for light finishes. Consider the materials and maintenance required rather than assuming one color will be universally easier to care for.
4) Choose what you love.
Select ideas that suit your house and reflect your personal taste. When you blend practical choices with elements that resonate with you, the result feels intentional and comfortable.
