White Painted Wood Bookcase Makeover: Before and After Photos

Don’t you love how a fresh coat of paint can completely transform a piece of furniture? A few days ago I mentioned that we had this bookcase in our last two homes. It had been stored in our garage for a while; it originally belonged to my dad and I think he picked it up secondhand. We prefer classic, well-made pieces because they tend to last, and this bookcase is a perfect example.

You might remember this unit from my navy home office in our previous house. I considered painting it back then but it wasn’t the right time, so I did a smaller update instead — papering the back with maps to brighten the shelves. That helped for a while, but eventually we decided to give the entire piece a new finish.

Painting a dark wood cabinet white is a commitment. It takes patience and multiple coats to get full coverage. For this project we skipped chalk and milk paints and used several layers of high-quality paint applied carefully so the finish would be durable and even.

Here was the before!

I really liked the bookcase in its original wood finish — I love real wood — but painting it gave the room a different, lighter feeling. After considering a few colors, I chose the same neutral shade used on our walls, kitchen, and trim (Simply White by Benjamin Moore). Painting it this color helped the piece blend in and feel more built-in, creating a subtle, cohesive look.

Now it fits seamlessly with the style of our kitchen and helps tie the nearby spaces together.

I’ll share more photos from different angles so you can see how it sits in the room and relates to adjacent spaces. I love this spot for it — the bookcase brings character and a sense of continuity to the small house we’re shaping.

We’ve been rearranging and refining our home for years. I usually have a vision for each room, but timing and patience matter, and sometimes it takes trying different arrangements to land on what feels right. Lately it feels like many things are settling into places that may stay for a long time — or at least for now.

Small updates can make a bigger impact than you’d expect. I’ve long dreamed of built-ins throughout the house, but creative, budget-friendly solutions like repainting a favorite piece help create the same cozy, cohesive feeling without a full remodel. They’re satisfying reminders of how far the space has come.

We still have lots of projects on the list and plenty of ideas for this house, but each small step is worth celebrating.

If you enjoy simple updates, painting a cherished piece can be an affordable way to refresh your space and make the home feel more intentional and cohesive. Small changes add up — and often they’re the most rewarding.
