Now that December is here, I’m finally ready to turn on the Christmas music. After Thanksgiving I’ve been easing into the season—stretchy pants, slow mornings, and getting the house settled so everything feels cozy and welcoming for the holidays.

Today I’m sharing four simple tips for creating a warm, cozy winter mood in your home.

1. Plan a cozy baking day in the kitchen.

The recent cold snap had me imagining snow outside while I baked inside, so I spent a day prepping the kitchen and stocking up on baking essentials. Even when it doesn’t actually snow, the ritual of making hot chocolate, decorating cookies, and pulling fresh treats from the oven makes the house feel festive and snug.

A few simple touches, like themed mugs or whimsical cookie cutters, turn baking into an event. Last year we even hung paper snowflakes in the kitchen early in the month so it felt like a cozy snowstorm indoors before any real snow arrived.

When real snow is scarce, build your own atmosphere with seasonal decor and treats—marshmallows, hot cocoa, and warm baked goods go a long way.

Jack’s reaction when I suggest skipping a cold walk and staying in to shop instead—priceless. Cozy plans are sometimes better than braving the elements.

2. Gather your coziest snowstorm essentials.

Even if the power stays on, I love how lanterns, candles, and soft lighting warm a room’s atmosphere during cold weather. Think layered lighting—table lamps, string lights, and a few candles—to create a calm, inviting living room where you want to linger on a snowy day.

A few well-chosen accessories—a plush throw, a soft rug, and warm-toned lighting—make your home feel like a refuge from the cold. These details encourage slower, cozier days spent reading, chatting, or enjoying comfort food.

3. Prepare for creature comforts.

Comfort means different things to everyone. My dog Jack prioritizes warmth and a comfortable spot more than mood lighting, and my husband and I often have the opposite temperature preferences—one of us is always cold while the other is too warm. Create options: an extra blanket draped over a chair, a warmed throw on the couch, and a few cozy nooks so everyone can find their ideal spot.

4. Design a favorite cozy destination.

Create a dedicated cozy corner or destination in your home. For us, that’s the new game table near the fireplace—perfect for puzzles, board games, and long candlelit dinners. Arrange seating so it invites conversation, add a soft throw or two, and keep a basket of games, puzzles, or books on hand for chilly afternoons.

Stocking the space with activities and soft lighting makes it feel like a destination you’ll return to all season long. A small collection of candles and a candlelit dinner can make even an ordinary evening feel special.
