Craft Closet Makeover

Beneath My Heart

A

As the new year begins, I’ve been thinking about projects I want to tackle, and organizing several areas of my home is at the top of the list. There are a few spots that have slowly become catchalls, and this year I’m determined to reclaim them and make them useful again.

I recently shared the cheerful makeover we completed for our guest room, which I still love. On one side of that room is a small closet that has been underused for far too long. To be honest, it has become one of those places where we stuff things when we don’t know where else to put them. Do you have a closet like that?

My goal for this year is to transform that neglected closet into a functional craft and gift-wrap station. I’ve been collecting inspiration online and I’m more motivated than ever to make better use of the space. With a little planning and some smart storage solutions, a small closet can become a tidy, efficient craft area.

I’ve found that successful closet makeovers focus on a few key principles: assess what you actually need to store, sort items into categories, use vertical space with shelving and hooks, and choose clear or labeled containers so everything is easy to find. For a craft closet, that might mean dedicating zones for paper and wrapping, tools and adhesives, fabric and yarn, and a small work surface if space allows.

Small additions make a big difference: slim rolling carts can slide into narrow gaps, pegboards keep tools visible and accessible, and tension rods or wall-mounted racks can hold wrapping paper or rulers. Don’t overlook the inside of the door — pockets, baskets, or mounted organizers can hold scissors, tape, and small supplies without taking up shelf space.

When planning, measure the closet carefully so storage solutions fit well and avoid overcrowding. Prioritize frequently used items at eye level and lower, heavier supplies near the floor. Group similar supplies together and label bins to maintain order. Lighting also matters; a battery-powered LED puck or strip light can make a compact closet feel brighter and more usable.

Once complete, a craft closet can save time and reduce stress by keeping supplies organized and visible. It turns a forgotten corner into a productive, pleasant space where projects can start and finish without hunting for materials.
