Good Housekeeping
In autumn I begin craving the warm, cozy elements that make a home feel inviting. Bright white walls work wonderfully in summer’s sunlight, but they can feel cold once the light softens. If you want instant autumnal warmth and texture, grasscloth wallpaper is a wonderful choice for adding subtle pattern and natural depth to a room.
When I moved into my 1930s English Tudor in Portland, the bedroom already had grasscloth on the walls. I loved it, though the room’s heavy smoke smell meant the paper eventually had to come down. Even so, that experience left me with a lasting appreciation for grasscloth, and I’ve wanted to bring it back into a space whenever the right room appears.
Wallpaper can intimidate people—especially older papers that were glued on with industrial-strength paste and were a nightmare to remove. We’ve stripped our fair share of wall coverings, and it’s not my favorite task. The good news is modern wallcoverings and adhesives are generally easier to work with and less permanent than older installations, so you’re less likely to face a Herculean removal job later.
I’m still figuring out what this house needs, but I’m confident it would welcome the warmth of grasscloth. The question is: where should it go?
There are many options to consider. Below are inspirational rooms to spark ideas and help you decide how to use grasscloth in your home.
