I had a few quiet minutes the other day before family arrived and realized I still hadn’t replaced my winter door decor. No crunchy evergreen boughs or leftover wreaths this time, so that was a small victory. Still, the front porch felt empty and uninviting — lots of bare pots and a few stray items, nothing that said “spring” or “we live here.”
Everything felt stuck between seasons. Without planted pots or fresh accents, the entry looked like we hadn’t emerged from winter yet. I briefly imagined myself as one of those people who always has a perfectly styled porch on the first day of spring, but it was raining and I wasn’t eager to spend time outdoors.
Then I remembered I already had what I needed: a scalloped basket I’d been saving and some faux spring branches in the garage (hoarding pays off sometimes!). I quickly arranged the branches in the basket, hung it on the door, and instantly the entry felt fresh and welcoming.
The basket and branches created an immediate sense of spring at the door. I decided I could finish the rest of the porch later, maybe when the sun comes out.
The basket is large, so you might wonder if it’s in the way. It’s noticeable from the path and guests have to open the door carefully, so it’s unlikely anyone will bump into it. If you have a smaller doorway or prefer less bulk, choose a smaller basket. For my door, the scale feels right and the piece hangs easily from a single nail, so it’s simple to remove or reposition.
What makes this arrangement work is the combination of the sizable basket and the airy branches. The basket reads as a statement piece at the scale of our porch and looks striking from the street. It gives the entry instant character without a lot of effort.
When I get the pots planted and finish updating the porch, I’ll share a photo of the full view from the curb.
This scalloped basket filled with seasonal stems would also look lovely hung on an interior wall as a focal piece. I’m excited to use it in other spots and for different seasons, but for now I’m enjoying it on the front door. It makes me feel like I’m prepared for spring and ready to welcome guests. It’s good to be home.
