Hi friends! Courtney (Melissa’s daughter) here. I’ve lived in a variety of small spaces and rentals over the years — from shared college rooms to a tiny bedroom at my sister’s townhouse, a 600-square-foot studio, and now a 500-square-foot one-bedroom. Because of that experience, I’ve learned how to make small homes feel cozy, peaceful, and inspiring.
Last week I did an Amazon Live sharing some of my favorite small-space tips. If you missed it, you can watch the replay.
These tips work whether you rent or own. If you prefer reading, here are the highlights from the video — five practical and stylish ways to make a small space feel warm and inviting, plus some easy hacks you can try this season.
Five Clever Ways to Make a Small Space Cozy and Inviting

- Use Soft Lighting
Soft, layered lighting instantly warms a small space. Here are the practical choices I rely on:
- During the day I use natural light and keep overhead lights off; lamps provide additional light when needed.
- To avoid dreary corners in the evening, place a lamp in each corner when possible and use warm bulbs. If outlets are limited, rechargeable bulbs are a great workaround.
- Battery-operated candles with realistic flicker add ambience without the worry of flame.
- Copper wire string lights on a slow fade setting are perfect for draping over consoles, inside lanterns, or on bookshelves to create a soft glow.
- Small salt lamps and color-adjustable bulbs can provide a gentle, warm tone; a dimmable color-changing bulb lets you choose warmer yellow or orange settings for cozy evenings.
- Diffusers with a candle-flicker setting and autumn blends like nutmeg, orange, and vanilla boost the cozy feeling with subtle scent.

2. Be Selective and Make Everyday Items Pretty
In a small home, every item on display counts. Choose pieces that are both useful and attractive, and be intentional about what remains visible. I assess daily-use items and decide if they contribute to the room’s style; if they do, I leave them out, and if not, I tuck them away.
For example, I keep my kettles on the counter because I use them daily and they match my kitchen’s aesthetic. Other frequently used items like my coffee grinder, filters, or vitamins are stored out of sight to avoid clutter. Periodically checking what’s out helps keep the space feeling fresh and purposeful.
You don’t have to use something every day to display it — leave out pieces that genuinely bring you joy. A few simple touches I use in my kitchen include:
- Rolled oats in a glass lidded jar on the counter for function and texture.
- A small stack of cookbooks leaned on the counter for color and coziness.
- Wood cutting boards propped against the backsplash to add warmth.
- Pretty patterned kitchen towels visible on the stove handle or over the sink.
- A narrow, simple toaster to save counter space and keep the look streamlined.
- A glass foaming soap dispenser to replace plastic bottles and tidy the sink area.

A regular declutter check helps you notice items that no longer inspire you. Try putting a few things away for a week and see if you miss them — you might prefer the simpler look.

3. Make Your Space Work for You
Small spaces should be practical and comfortable. Use tools and small conveniences that improve daily life and make the home feel effortless. A few of my favorite functional details:
- A smart speaker for music, weather, timers, and easy voice control — it adds both convenience and atmosphere.
- Multi-prong plugs and outlet extenders where outlets are limited to increase usable power sources.
- Remote-control outlets for lamps are incredibly useful — plug a lamp into a remote plug and turn it on or off from a distance, which is especially handy in tight floor plans.
- Smart plugs that work with apps and voice assistants let you control lights remotely or create schedules.
- A compact step stool makes high shelves reachable and keeps everything accessible without bulky furniture.

4. Decorate with Staple Neutrals
Neutral staple pieces create a calm foundation so you can change up color or pattern through pillows, throws, and smaller accessories. Neutral furniture and rugs bring cohesion and make a small space feel larger and more serene.
- A sisal or natural fiber rug adds texture and a warm tone without overwhelming the room.
- A simple off-white platform bed and neutral linen bedding create a peaceful bedroom base that’s easy to style seasonally.
- A neutral upholstered settee lets you switch out pillows and throws to refresh the look without replacing large pieces.

5. Utilize Vertical Storage
Maximize vertical surfaces to increase storage without crowding floor space. A few helpful solutions I use:
- Raised or tiered trays double usable surface area on nightstands and dressers, organizing small items neatly.
- Narrow, stackable plastic drawers work well under bathroom cabinets and in tight spots to keep things accessible but hidden.
Small changes can make a big difference in how a compact home feels. Thoughtful lighting, selective styling, smart conveniences, a neutral foundation, and vertical organization will help your space feel cozy, functional, and personal.
