As we’ve been looking at houses in Seattle while preparing for our move, one thing has become clear: in a competitive market like Seattle, homes in our price range often need some TLC. A common update that makes a huge difference is adding or replacing windows and doors to bring in more light and connect the interior to the outdoors.

My mother has remodeled many beautiful homes and she always offered the same advice: whether building new or renovating, adding more windows is one of the best investments you can make. I’ve seen this firsthand—installing French doors in several houses transformed their look and feel. That advice is at the front of my mind as I house-hunt. Instead of being discouraged by a dark kitchen or no view of the backyard, I think: ADD WINDOWS AND DOORS. I look forward to applying that advice in our next home.Arched French Door - Marvin Windows and Doors

I was recently invited by Marvin Windows to take part in a virtual design challenge, which sounded like fun. They asked me to envision a room transformed by a new window or door and to create a mood board around that vision. As someone who loves dreaming about rooms, I jumped at the chance. The first space that came to mind is a room I see often: a dark, small kitchen or dining nook that lacks personality and a connection to the outdoors.

I often think how much better these spaces would be with gorgeous French doors to enhance the architecture, flood the room with light, and frame a view of the backyard. For this project I imagined converting a formerly dim eating area into a bright, charming breakfast room by installing arched double French doors with leaded glass panes. The effect would be dramatic—these doors can make a room feel open, elegant, and welcoming.

Imagine those arched doors opening onto a backyard, courtyard, or a brick patio with blooming flowers and neatly clipped boxwoods. A striped awning or a pergola could add charm, and a few string lights would make the scene even more inviting. Picture sitting at a round wood table, enjoying breakfast while gazing out at that view. The doors would not only bring light in but also create a sense of indoor-outdoor living without changing the home’s footprint.

A Charming Breakfast Room - The Inspired Room blogThese doors are like miracle workers: they let light flood the space, add architectural character, and visually expand the room. The space would look beautiful even unfurnished, but adding a rug, a round table that echoes the arch, comfortable chairs, and statement lighting would complete the room and make it a favorite spot in the house.

I hope to make this dream a reality someday.
