I love the gentle sounds that fill our home. Laughter is my favorite, but when the house is quiet I take pleasure in birdsong outside the windows, wind moving through the trees, the rustle of palm leaves near the porch, soft background music, the steady bubble of my oil diffuser, and the delicate tinkling of new capiz shell wind chimes hanging just beyond the kitchen. Those familiar chimes in the tree on the far side of the yard also bring a comforting sense of place.
I try to slow down often and listen closely for these peaceful sounds. A home that engages all of the senses feels complete. Sound is an easy element to overlook, yet it contributes so much to how a space feels.
Recently I ordered a set of three capiz shell wind chimes. As I unwrapped them, I didn’t expect how much their presence would change the feeling of our porch. The first time we hung them on nails and hooks it was very windy, and the soft, gentle tinkling of the shells in the breeze sounded almost magical right outside the kitchen.

When my husband stepped back to admire them he joked, “OK, that’s it — we can never move!” I laughed, but I understood what he meant. Small additions that feel meaningful quickly make a house feel more like our home.
We could of course take the chimes with us if we moved, yet his reaction revealed how little moments and objects can deepen our attachment to a place. Each new decorative piece or heartfelt experience adds to the sense that this is where we belong.
Each time we add something meaningful or have an experience that touches us, we feel more connected to this space as our home.
It really is the little things. Often a stronger bond to home and family comes through the senses. Over time, the positive moments our senses record—sight, sound, scent, touch—embed small pieces of joy into our daily life and surroundings.
