Valentine’s Day Party Ideas & DIY Cake Topper Tutorial

Valentine's Day Ideas

I can’t believe 2014 is already here! For those who haven’t met me on The Inspired Room, I’m Michaela, and I share a monthly post about entertaining. I love creating simple, beautiful gatherings, so today I’m showing how to set up a girly Valentine’s Day dessert bar perfect for friends. Time really does fly!

Valentine’s Day is often associated with romantic love, but it’s just as meaningful to celebrate friendships. With a few thoughtful touches you can host a charming girlfriend Valentine’s party that feels special without being complicated.

Quick and easy DIY cake topper

Materials: paint brush, wooden hearts, chalkboard paint, kabob sticks, tape or glue.

Step 1: Paint the wooden hearts with chalkboard paint. Let them dry and apply a second coat. Allow an hour or two to dry fully.

Step 2: Paint the kabob sticks (I used gold for a subtle shine). Trim the sticks to the desired length and tape or glue them to the back of the hearts.

Step 3: Use chalk or chalk pen to write a message on the hearts — I chose X&O, but you can use initials or a short phrase.

For a small favor at a girlfriend party, write a short, sweet note, tuck it into a red chevron bag, and tie it to a bottle of red or pink nail polish. It’s inexpensive, pretty, and thoughtful.

Here’s how the full setup looked: cake, cake topper, fresh flowers, Martinelli’s in pretty glasses—simple items arranged thoughtfully make a lovely display. This kind of gathering is perfect for a cozy movie night filled with chick-flicks and laughter.

Gluten Free Valentine's Cake

I baked a gluten-free chocolate cake using a boxed mix for convenience, and made homemade frosting. No shame in shortcuts when the result is delicious. Frosting recipe:

3 cups powdered sugar

1 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 tablespoons whipping cream

Combine powdered sugar and butter and mix on low speed until blended. Increase to medium and beat for about 3 minutes. Add vanilla and whipping cream and beat on medium for another minute until smooth and fluffy.
