TThis time of year I find myself thinking more about the dining room and how to make it feel prettier and more welcoming for family and guests. I already have a few ideas in mind — more on those soon.

Many people rarely use their dining rooms; sometimes they become offices or craft spaces. For us, however, the dining room is where we eat. Since there’s no kitchen table in our home, the dining room is the place to gather for meals.

A cozy dining room — like the one pictured above — naturally invites you to sit down and linger. I love discovering spaces like this for inspiration. Today I’m revisiting the Fall “designer secrets” series to highlight five features I admire in this dining room designed by Caitlin Creer.

What makes this room cozy?

1) The fireplace.

A fireplace instantly adds warmth and a focal point that draws people in. It creates a sense of comfort and makes the room feel lived-in and welcoming.

2) The wallpaper.

The textured wallpaper on the accent wall is a major contributor to the room’s cozy atmosphere. Without it, the space would still be pretty, but the texture and the serene color give the room depth and calm that feels inviting.

3) The wood.

Wood elements—on the floors, ceiling beams and mantel—add natural warmth. The repeated wood tones wrap the space in a cohesive way. Even the chandelier includes wood trim, which ties everything together. Despite the generous use of wood, the room retains a fresh feel thanks to white finishes and coastal accents.

4) The rustic table.

A rustic dining table encourages relaxation and lingering. Compared with a more formal table, a weathered or simple wood table invites guests to stay awhile, creating an informal and comfortable dining experience.

5) The chairs.

The mixed chairs are an inspired choice. They aren’t overly plush, but the variety brings visual interest and a sense of welcome. Textured side chairs add warmth, while the open lattice backs keep the small room feeling airy rather than crowded, creating a comfortable, livable space.

I’d love to be invited to dinner in that room — wouldn’t you?
