Long before I learned the word hygge (pronounced HOO-gah) I was already drawn to its spirit: creating a warm, comfortable home, savoring small pleasures, and prioritizing well-being. When I first encountered the concept I remember thinking, “That sounds exactly like me.” I love shaping atmosphere through simple rituals and cozy spaces, and I often imagine I’d feel right at home in Denmark.
Each year my home goals circle back to the same desire—to cultivate more comfort and calm in our everyday life. Remodel projects have dominated the past months, and while renovating can be rewarding, it isn’t the most conducive time for settling into comfort. I’m relieved that this season of heavy work is winding down, and I’m looking forward to a quieter stretch focused on nesting and enjoying the home we’ve been working towards.
As the house comes together I’m excited about sharing the warmth we’ve created. But comfort doesn’t always happen by accident. If we don’t intentionally welcome cozy habits into our days, the season can slip by without them. In my book Make Room for What You Love I talk about how creating the home you want requires purposeful choices—and that’s especially true in winter.
It’s easy to fall into a low-energy rhythm after the holidays. Instead of celebrating the slower, restorative pace of winter, we can fixate on shorter days, messy weather, or what we’re missing from brighter seasons. We may reach for screens to pass the evening rather than choosing small, deliberate comforts—lighting candles, wrapping up in a soft blanket, or picking up a good book.
Those little rituals make a big difference. A crackling fire, simple string lights, or a warm drink can transform a dark evening into something gentle and restorative. Without them, we risk spending winter evenings under the glow of a television or laptop, missing chances to create memory and ease.
This is a gentle reminder to keep the warmth alive. Leave the twinkle lights up a while longer. Light a candle or stoke the fire. Put away your phone, pull on your favorite pajamas, and settle in close with family or a loved one. These small acts are the heart of a cozy winter home.
I’ll share more ideas and rituals for making the most of winter and embracing hygge in the weeks ahead. For now, enjoy the simple comforts you already have and give yourself permission to slow down and savor them.
