Conservatory Design Ideas Inspired by Nature

Traditional Sunroom by London Furniture & Accessories Rise Art

In our English Tudor in Portland, we added a corner to the kitchen that felt like a conservatory or garden room. I loved the abundant light pouring through the windows.

I’m sharing a couple of photos of that kitchen conservatory (we called it “The Castle” on my blog) below. These are low-resolution screen captures from a 2007 video when the house was for sale, but they still convey the idea.

Another view from my conservatory-like kitchen (see more of my old house here):

A conservatory is traditionally a room with glass walls and a roof attached to a house, often used as a greenhouse or sun parlor. Even if you don’t have a full conservatory, a room with large windows and skylights can bring that same bright, airy feeling and make a dramatic difference to a home.

Even before we owned the Tudor, I dreamed of an English conservatory. In our first small house I contacted a company about building a modest one, but we moved instead. Maybe one day that dream will come true.

I can’t get over that dining room — it’s stunning.

My heart leaps for this one: a conservatory opening onto a garden with lovely white fencing. It’s the kind of view that makes you want to linger with a cup of tea.

Or consider this one tucked onto the back of a beautiful farmhouse — I’d be happy to have it.

Do you have a conservatory or garden room in your home, or perhaps a greenhouse where you like to potter and relax?
