Inspired by Funky Junk and Other Beautiful Finds

Funky Junk Interiors

This week I’m inspired by women who bravely create a home that is beautiful to them.

I don’t care whether someone’s home is in style or out of style, magazine-ready or lived-in, old or new, farmhouse or English cottage, colorful or neutral.

I value the life and spirit behind decorating more than the pursuit of design perfection. Photos and trends can spark ideas, but most of us live within budgets, limitations and priorities that shape how our homes look. What we create may not match someone else’s ideal, and that’s okay. Homes are personal; they reflect where we are and what we have, and learning to find contentment with that is important.

Who are we to judge someone else’s sense of beauty? Come closer and listen: don’t pay attention to that kind of talk.

Your home should be a place of peace. You deserve to feel accomplished and proud of your space. You deserve to enjoy living in it, not worry that others will fault you for choosing a fabric that was popular decades ago or for having wood they consider unfashionable. Who made those rules, and why should their opinions matter to you?

I read a heartfelt series this week by Donna at Funky Junk Interiors. She wrote about a mysterious illness she has quietly faced and how, during recovery, she began turning what others might call “junk” into beauty for her home. Her creativity and eye for beauty transform discarded materials into pieces with character and warmth.

What stood out most was that Donna’s style emerged from necessity. With limited funds and health challenges that kept her at home, she started creating from what she had on hand. Through that process she developed a distinctive style—one rooted in resourcefulness and imagination.

When I see people online mock someone else’s choices, I cringe. We don’t know one another’s stories—the limitations people work around, the priorities they juggle, or the struggles they face. Taste is personal, and the path each person takes to create a home is different. Many of us live with imperfections and constraints, yet still find ways to make our spaces meaningful.

Homes should be valued for what they represent, not judged solely by design trends.

I admire the beauty Donna carved out of her circumstances. She truly has a style many people love, including me—I’m fond of many different looks—but that admiration is secondary. What truly matters is that she found peace and happiness by creating beauty with what she had. Her courage to be herself is inspiring.

We all deserve the confidence to develop our own style.

Please take a moment to visit Donna at Funky Junk Interiors and tell her I sent you. Her heartfelt series begins with a post that shows how she started making changes and finding beauty in simple, unexpected places.

Tips for using these linkies:

If your post includes a great photo, link it up. If not, you can link an image or your blog button. Use a short description so visitors know what the post is about—“Kitchen Makeover” or “Blueberry Pie” work well. If your title isn’t descriptive, consider using your blog name or a clear summary instead.
