I enjoy personalizing our home with special details. It doesn’t happen overnight; it builds gradually, layer by layer. Each small element contributes to the overall look and feel, making the space feel distinctly ours.
I’ve owned this brass wall sconce for years and even used it in our previous home. For a long time I powered it with a rechargeable bulb, which was a simple, affordable solution. Recently, while an electrician was in the house for other work, we decided to have the sconce hardwired. It’s a small change but makes a big difference—now I can flip a switch and the light comes on instantly in this prominent spot of our living room.
What truly makes this sconce feel like mine is the lampshade. That one simple addition gives the fixture personality and ties it into the room. The brass sconce is a popular, classic piece—affordable and widely available—but the shade makes it unique.
I discovered a handmade patterned lampshade on Etsy with an oval shape that fits this small spot perfectly. The fabric’s color palette harmonizes with the room and adds a touch of warmth and charm. Because the shade is compact, it’s easy to swap in a different one later if I want a fresh look; extras can be stored in a drawer until needed.
I’ve always loved how lamps, shades, and finials allow for personal expression. Changing a shade or finial is an easy, low-commitment way to refresh a space. Just as we’ve updated other areas of our home over time, small swaps like this let the room evolve without a major overhaul.
I’m working on finishing the bench area for fall, and this lampshade is a perfect starting point. It adds a little delight to that corner and sets the tone for the rest of the vignette.
More lampshades from the same maker and others are available if you’re looking for options; each one can instantly change the mood of a room.
