One of the things we love about our new house is the solid wood doors. In our previous home the hollow-core doors were the standard, so it’s been a pleasure to rediscover the weight, texture, and satisfying sound of a real wood door closing. We plan to update the door hardware eventually — it’s a small project with big impact, since knobs, levers, and plates can completely change a door’s character and the feel of a room.

Choosing new hardware gives you many style directions: classic brass for warmth, polished chrome for a modern edge, or glass and crystal for vintage glam. A simple swap can elevate plain doors into statement pieces, or help tie rooms together when you repeat finishes throughout the home. For example, matching bathroom, bedroom, and closet hardware in a consistent finish creates a cohesive, curated look.
When selecting hardware, consider proportion and scale. Heavier, more ornate knobs suit solid wood doors and traditional interiors, while slim lever handles and minimal rosettes complement contemporary designs. Think about finish longevity and maintenance — unlacquered brass changes with age, developing a patina, whereas polished finishes tend to show fingerprints more readily but are easier to clean.
Beyond aesthetics, pay attention to functionality: choose ADA-friendly levers where helpful, and ensure latch mechanisms fit your door thickness. Quality hardware not only looks better but also operates more smoothly and lasts longer, so investing in dependable brands and proper installation is worth the cost.
If you enjoy DIY, replacing knobs or levers is an approachable weekend project. Measure existing backsets and door thickness first, and keep original strike plates and mortises in mind when installing new hardware to avoid extra carpentry. If you prefer, a professional installer will ensure alignment, smooth operation, and a finished look.
