Setting a lamp on the kitchen counter is one of my favorite small touches for adding warmth and charm. It’s a simple element, but it feels unexpected because it isn’t widely used in kitchens. That contrast — familiar yet a little surprising — makes the idea so appealing. In the evenings, a lamp on the counter creates a cozy, inviting glow that instantly softens the space.

What do you think about lamps on kitchen counters?
They aren’t always as practical as overhead or wall lighting, and they do take up some counter space, but they offer a distinct aesthetic payoff. A well-placed lamp becomes both a functional light source and a decorative focal point. It can highlight a bowl of fruit, a stack of cookbooks, or a favorite ceramic piece, making the kitchen feel more personal and lived-in.
If you like the idea of lamps in the kitchen, here are a few practical tips: choose a lamp with a stable base to avoid accidents; pick a shade that softens the light to create ambiance; and place the lamp where it won’t interfere with food prep or cleaning. Consider smaller table lamps or plug-in sconces that mimic a lamp’s look but take up less surface area. Layering a lamp with existing task lighting gives you flexibility — bright light for cooking and a softer glow for evening gatherings.
