Pallet Garden Makeover 2012: DIY Raised Planter Ideas

Last summer I painted a pallet to serve as a privacy screen for my not-so-private deck. I hung a few French garden buckets filled with end-of-season annuals on the pallet to create a small-space hanging garden. It worked well as a first attempt, but I kept imagining adding more plants this year.

This weekend was ideal for getting started, so I unplugged from the computer and refreshed my pallet garden.

I liked the idea of planting directly in the pallet, but I lacked the patience to line the entire pallet with landscape fabric, pack it with soil, and wait for it to settle before setting the pallet upright. I prefer quick, simple steps—I’m a lazy DIYer who enjoys instant gratification.

Looking for a shortcut, I considered burlap planting pockets but ultimately chose coco liners similar to those used for hanging baskets. I found mine at a local store. They were easy to handle and fit nicely into the pallet openings.

I simply stapled the coco liners to the inside and back of the pallet, then filled them with potting mix and plants. The liners held the soil securely and were flexible enough to press into the pallet slots so dirt didn’t spill everywhere. The whole process was fast and tidy.

I should note I do not have a green thumb. This technique is experimental—I’m improvising as I go and can’t promise it’s a proven method. So far it’s working, but time will tell whether the plants thrive through the season.

While I enjoyed the long holiday weekend, I also updated the back porch. It was fun to freshen things up, and I’ll share the details later this week.

Have you started gardening yet?

I hope you all had a meaningful holiday weekend remembering those who serve and have sacrificed for our country.
