Yesterday I reshared a post I wrote a couple of years ago called “Finding the Happy Medium in Design.” Reading it again reminded me how consistent my preferences have been: I prefer a balance between calm, restrained elements and livelier, more playful details. For our home that middle ground—serene but not stark, lively but not chaotic—feels right.
To me, a serene room conveys a quieter mood: solids, subtle textures, fewer colors and restrained patterns. A lively room leans into bolder colors and more energetic, adventurous patterns. Both approaches can be beautiful; the choice comes down to how you want to feel in the space and how you live day to day. There are countless ways to dial energy up or down to suit your taste.

I admire perfectly serene rooms in photographs, and they often look stunning. But when I imagine living in them, I tend to want at least a few surprises—an accent pattern, a pop of color, or a textured piece that brings life and personality. The same principle applies to an entire house: a mix of calm and lively spaces keeps things interesting and comfortable.
At the opposite extreme, too much intensity can be overwhelming. I appreciate spaces that communicate thoughtful restraint—a controlled palette, intentional patterns, and a clear sense of balance. Design that feels considered and edited often makes a home feel restful and welcoming.

Design is deeply personal. The rooms you love in photos might not be the ones you most enjoy living in. I love looking at many different styles for inspiration—traditional, modern, eclectic—and noticing how people make those looks their own. Following only a single blog or magazine can create the illusion that there’s one prevailing trend, but exploring a wider range of sources reveals an abundance of options and ways to express your taste.

Across regions and cultures, homeowners and designers bring creativity and courage to their spaces. Some mix bold colors and patterns confidently, while others favor quiet palettes with layered neutrals. Seeing that variety is inspiring: it reminds you that design is about personal expression and finding what makes your home feel like yours.
Your home should tell your story. Whatever combination of layers, colors, and patterns feels right to you is exactly the right choice.

Today I thought it would be fun to do a little “get to know you” moment. It’s been a while since we did one of these posts, and I’d love to hear from readers about where they land on the calm–lively spectrum.
Delurk and introduce yourself: do you feel most at home with a serene, restrained look, a bold, lively one, or somewhere in between? Share what you love and why—let’s chat in the comments!
I love all the rooms featured here—each one has something inspiring to offer.
