Just as I love designing cozy, welcoming rooms inside the house, I enjoy shaping outdoor spaces with the same care. Thoughtful design elements, well-chosen furniture and a few architectural touches can define an outdoor room and turn a portion of your yard, patio or garden into a true destination.
With spring here, I have so many ideas for creating little garden retreats in our new yard. It’s exciting but can feel overwhelming — anyone else fill a notebook with plans and not know where to start? The key for me has been patience and a plan: great outdoor spaces are often created slowly, one project at a time.
In our previous yard we managed big ambitions by concentrating on one zone at a time. Focusing on a single special area makes it easier to stretch a budget and to see meaningful progress without trying to do everything at once. Start small, choose a focal point, and let the rest evolve.
Below is a collection of inspiring outdoor retreats and garden hideaways to spark ideas for your own space. Enjoy the images and consider which approach feels most inviting to you.
