Over the weekend we had a fierce wind and rain storm here in the Seattle area. I don’t mind storms when I’m safe inside, but for part of the trip we crossed Puget Sound on the ferry and I’ll admit I was a little unnerved. The waves crashed against the boat and splashed over the lower deck where we were parked. The ferry pitched and rolled as salt water splashed across our car in the dark. All I could think about was making it back to our warm, safe nest.
When we finally arrived home, it was pitch black both outside and inside—our power had gone out. We scrambled to light candles so we could find our way to cozy beds for the night. The soft glow felt so reassuring; it made being home feel even better.
Lighting candles as evening falls is a simple ritual I love in autumn. It’s comforting on ordinary nights, and especially welcome when the weather is wild.

Do you have a favorite fall candle? One of my top picks is a sweet vanilla cinnamon scent I shared about last year—it’s a warm, familiar fragrance that instantly feels like autumn.
