It’s easy to lose patience with home projects and with our own expectations. The internet accelerates everything: highlight reels, quick reveals, and curated before-and-afters make it seem like everyone else finishes a renovation in a weekend. Meanwhile, it can take me longer to decide what to make for breakfast. Sound familiar?
A reader recently told me, “everyone seems to be in a hurry.” That feeling is real. We want results fast, and endless scrolling can make us feel behind. But pushing to match someone else’s pace rarely fits our life, schedule, or season. Slow and steady wins here: establish a rhythm and routine, focus on one season at a time, and allow yourself permission to move at your own pace. Give yourself grace.

It doesn’t need to be all or nothing. I tackle a mix of quick one-day makeovers that keep momentum and long-term projects that evolve slowly. Some rooms come together in a weekend and others take years—sometimes six years—of small, steady steps. Looking back at what I’ve accomplished over time is deeply satisfying.
While it’s tempting to want everything finished right away, there’s real joy in letting a home develop gradually. Slowing down helps you appreciate what you’ve already done and notice how each season contributes to the character of your home.
Home Project Action Steps:
- Write a list of projects you want to tackle. Remember: they don’t all have to be completed at once. Which projects fit your current season? Which can wait? Could you split larger projects into smaller phases?
- Make a second list of completed projects and those still in progress. Celebrate the progress you’ve already made and use it as motivation for what comes next.
Save this post for when you need a reminder, or share it to encourage someone who feels pressured to hurry.
