Hunting for Green: Sustainable Living Tips and Eco-Friendly Finds

Thrifted Green Garden Stool - Decorating with Texture

I’ve spent the past couple of years refining the color palette that works best in our home. We’ve been slowly removing the builder’s default beige—what I like to call “swine walls”—and replacing it with a blend of warm grays, soft blues, and crisp whites. That neutral foundation feels cohesive and relaxed, and I love that nothing has to match exactly. We’re nearly finished—one more room is in the midst of its swine-to-neutral makeover.

Recently I’ve wanted to introduce a deeper green as an accent—not for the walls, but in accessories and textiles. A richer green brings warmth and depth to the softer blues, teals, and grays already in the mix.

I’ve been actively hunting for pieces in that green family (not to be confused with the 1980s hunter green of English Country trends—though I might unintentionally revive a few vintage touches). So I was delighted to find this little jewel-toned green garden stool at a local flea market. It felt like the perfect accidental discovery: a green accent, an affordable secondhand find, and a versatile piece I love having around.

Stools are some of my favorite small furnishings because they add color and texture while serving many functions. They work as extra seating, side tables, or simply as a decorative accent to anchor a vignette. I often tuck small stools around the house for practical use and to create interest in a room.

Have you seen the “How to Decorate” blogger series happening this week? I contributed a post about using texture in decorating.

PS. The nailhead-trim chair pictured is from Ballard Designs—I’ll be sharing updates on our family room soon.
