Find Your Signature Style: A Guide to Personal Fashion Identity

Your signature style - The Inspired Room

I encourage my daughters to choose a signature scent or a favorite piece of jewelry as a simple way to express their individuality. The same idea applies to style: having one special look, a scent you love, or a defining accessory can make you feel confident, put together, and uniquely you.

A signature style for your home is just as attainable. Whether you rent or own, live in a small apartment or a large house, your living space can reflect who you are, what you love, where you’ve been, and how you live. Those personal touches create a one-of-a-kind home that feels authentic and welcoming.

I always appreciate entering a home that feels warm and personal — that unmistakable sense that the space reflects the person who lives there. When someone’s home feels truly lived-in rather than merely “designed,” it often reveals a deeper connection expressed through their personal style.

Do you have a signature style? Maybe you haven’t thought about it, or perhaps you have a general idea of what you like but haven’t defined it. You don’t need a label to have a signature style. It can be subtle and developed over time, shaped by the pieces and colors that make you happiest.

A signature style can be expressed with:

– Distinctive furniture or heirloom pieces that tell a story

– An element of surprise, such as unique lighting or quirky accessories

– A thoughtful mix of colors and textures that feel fresh to you

– Unexpected pattern combinations that still feel cohesive

– A curated collection that reflects your interests

– Artwork that holds personal meaning

In my own home I enjoy mixing flea market finds, new pieces, family heirlooms, and items I’ve customized. That blend of old and new, curated and unexpected, results in a space that feels uniquely mine.

Even if you’re inspired by popular styles or admire someone else’s aesthetic, your personal mix of items—how you edit and arrange them—will create a singular look that belongs to you alone.

You don’t need to name your style. Instead, collect what you love and what works for your life. Choose a color palette that inspires you and seek out pieces that spark joy. Over time, this approach naturally forms a coherent signature style.

Knowing your signature style makes decorating and shopping much easier. Since most people build their homes gradually, recognizing which pieces fit your aesthetic helps you make confident choices and create rooms that feel harmonious.

Remember that a signature style can evolve. As your tastes change, feel free to experiment, take risks, and refresh your space. Staying true to your preferences while embracing new ideas keeps your home feeling current and genuinely yours.

I enjoyed reading the responses to my earlier post, “Get to Know You: Your Style.” It’s always interesting to see how people describe their own aesthetics. Some find it hard to define their style, and that’s perfectly fine. Part of the fun is discovering the elements that make a space feel like you.

Do you have a signature style or a standout piece of furniture that defines your home?
