It is almost time for holiday parties!
I’ve always loved hosting gatherings. Having a party on the calendar is one of my best tricks for keeping the house tidy—knowing guests are coming motivates me to get things in order. Whether I host a large celebration or a small get-together, I follow the same simple steps to prepare. Creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere helps me relax so I can focus on my guests instead of worrying about the details.
Top Ten Things to Do Before a Party:
- Sweep the front walk and porch. A tidy entrance makes a positive first impression. Place a clean doormat outside so guests can wipe their feet.
- Turn on your outdoor lighting. Well-lit paths help guests feel welcome and safe. For extra charm, consider filling mason jars partway with Epsom salts and placing votive candles inside; line your walkway or porch with them for a cozy glow.
- Pay attention to the entryway. The entry sets the tone for your home. Tidy clutter and shoes, provide a clean mat inside, and offer a spot for coats. Light a candle a couple of hours before guests arrive—extinguish it to let the wax settle, then relight about 20 minutes before guests come so the scent fills the space without the wick drowning in wax.
- Prepare a clean, inviting powder room. Stock fresh hand towels, extra toilet paper, and an empty wastebasket. Place a candle or subtle fragrance in a safe spot and light it shortly before guests arrive to keep the room smelling pleasant.
- Choose soft background music. Keep volume low enough for conversation, but audible enough to set a festive mood. Instrumental or lightly upbeat playlists work well as unobtrusive background music that keeps the energy pleasant without overpowering conversation.
- Provide ample seating. Pull up extra chairs, stools, or ottomans so people can gather comfortably. Make sure there are surfaces or small tables for drinks and light snacks; bowls of nuts or bite-sized treats help guests feel at ease while mingling.
- Turn off the television. Quiet the TV so it doesn’t compete with conversation. A peaceful, focused setting encourages guests to connect and enjoy each other’s company.
- Mind your lighting. A poorly lit home can feel gloomy. Use a combination of overhead lights, lamps, and candles to create a welcoming balance—bright and cheerful, or softly cozy depending on the mood you want, but avoid dark, uninviting corners.
- Have beverages ready upon arrival. Offer a pitcher of ice water and consider a warm, fragrant drink like hot spiced cider to greet guests. A welcoming beverage as guests step in makes them feel cared for right away.
- Take a deep breath and smile. Greet your guests warmly. A relaxed host sets the tone for an enjoyable gathering.
