It’s the most wonderful time of the year. For the first time in several seasons I don’t have a major book deadline hanging over the holidays, and it feels luxurious to slow down and savor the small traditions that make this time of year special.

One of those traditions this year is a gingerbread house night with friends and family.

Isn’t the gingerbread house in the photo stunning? My friend Rebekah shared it from Old World Market on Instagram — her sisters built it — and it stopped me mid-scroll. I’m realistic about my own creation: it probably won’t be as ornate as that one, but dreaming is half the fun.

Here are a few gingerbread kits you might still be able to order in time for holiday fun:

You can also try a gingerbread house bundt pan if you want a different approach — a fun, simple alternative to assembling panels.

More gingerbread inspiration can be found in seasonal roundups and family-activity posts.

A few other favorite Christmas activities on our list:

  • Making Christmas cookies — we might bake those vegan, gluten‑free gingerbread cookies again; they were so cute last year.
  • Attending a Christmas Eve church service with our whole family. This year we’re also hosting extended family, which makes the evening feel even more special.
  • Driving through neighborhood streets to admire holiday light displays and festive decorations.
  • Sipping hot cider while watching family-favorite films — Father of the Bride is a cozy pick for us this season, even if it isn’t strictly a Christmas movie.

What is one magical thing you’re looking forward to this Christmas season?
