Our home should be a refuge—a place where we recharge and feel comfortable. Yet many everyday products we bring into our houses introduce chemicals that can undermine that safety. Research shows the average household contains dozens of known toxic chemicals, often hidden in cleaning products, personal care items, and laundry supplies.
Products marketed to clean our kitchens and bathrooms or care for our skin and hair can contain ingredients linked to asthma, hormonal disruption, reproductive issues, and even effects on developing brains. Knowing this can be alarming, but it’s also motivating: small changes can make a big difference.

For example, a study from George Washington University found dozens of toxic chemicals commonly present in household dust. If these substances settle into dust, they’re likely accumulating in our homes and potentially in our bodies. The good news is that there are practical steps you can take right now to reduce exposure and create a healthier living space.
It can feel overwhelming to overhaul everything at once, so my approach is to replace one product at a time with cleaner, safer alternatives. Making your own household cleaners is often simple, affordable, and effective. Over the next few weeks I’ll share more DIY recipes and additional changes we’ve made at home.
Today I’m sharing an easy, natural daily shower spray that helps prevent soap scum buildup without harsh chemicals.

Daily shower spray: what you need
- 1/2 cup vodka or white vinegar
- 1 cup distilled water
- About 10 drops peppermint essential oil, or another essential oil you prefer
Combine the ingredients in a glass spray bottle, shake gently, and mist your shower after each use. There’s no need to rinse or wipe it off—the solution helps keep soap scum and mineral buildup at bay with minimal effort.
Notes and suggestions
Using vodka makes a clear spray and acts as a mild disinfectant; white vinegar is a budget-friendly, natural alternative. Choose a high-quality, pure essential oil you trust for scent and additional cleaning properties. Store the spray in a cool place and label the bottle.
This simple swap is one of many easy ways to reduce chemicals in your home. Small, consistent changes—like replacing a single cleaning product with a natural version—add up over time and help create a safer, more refreshing living space for your family.
