Flea Market Find: Vintage Secretary Desk with Hutch Makeover

The Inspired Room Navy Office Update Progress

For years I kept two large dark wood bookcases in my office. They stored a lot of books, but after adding a couple of new bookcases elsewhere in the house, I realized I didn’t need so many books in this room. The heavy cabinets felt out of scale in my small office, so they were moved to a different area of the house where they fit better. My office measures about 11 by 11, so every inch matters. If you missed yesterday’s office update post, you can find it there.

What I really needed was a compact work surface and storage for everyday supplies. My ideal was built-ins to maximize the space, but since that wasn’t in the budget I set that idea aside.

A while back, my daughter Courtney and I found a charming solid wood secretary and hutch at a local flea market run by The Vintage Housewife in Poulsbo. It was already painted white and had sweet, original hardware—an instant favorite.

When I first spotted it, I wasn’t thinking about my office at all. We walked around imagining other spots in the house for it and decided we didn’t have space for more furniture. A few blocks later, sitting in a coffee shop with our drinks, it suddenly clicked: this piece would be perfect in my office.

We hurried back to the shop and bought it. For a short time it sat in our entryway until we had the big bookcases moved, but that wait was worth it.

Now that it’s in the office, I’m thrilled with how well it works. The little cubbies are perfect for notecards and paint samples, and the glass-front cabinets display a few favorite books and treasures. The drawers hide office supplies out of sight.

Best of all, the secretary’s drop-down desk provides a second work surface when needed. It’s great for a laptop, and my daughters and I even used it as a small table for lunch one day. The piece brings a vintage, personal touch to my compact, eclectic office while adding practical storage and functionality.

PS. The gold “Oh Happy Day” print in the hutch was a gift from my friend Lara Casey. She is the Editor-in-Chief of Southern Weddings and runs a shop with items that inspire—paper goods designed to help women focus on what matters and take action. The print adds a cheerful, motivating touch to the hutch and reminds me how small details can brighten a workspace.
