Earlier this summer I was searching for a neutral, textured rug with a relatively flat weave so I could layer another rug on top if desired. This jute-cotton blend turned out to be the perfect fit. I like the beachy look of sisal and seagrass, but this rug is softer thanks to the cotton blend, making it comfortable for little ones. We’re especially happy about that since our first grandchild is expected in February.

I’ve had several questions about this rug lately, so here are the most frequently asked ones with straightforward answers.

A few FAQ:

Q: Is it soft (soft enough for toddlers to crawl around on?)

A: Yes — it’s soft and not scratchy, thanks to the cotton blended with jute.

Q: Do you use a rug pad with it?

A: Yes. I use a rug pad with it to add extra cushion and to help keep the rug in place.

Q: Does it pull up with dog nails?

A: We’ve had this rug since summer and both of our dogs use it daily without noticeable pulls. Natural fibers like jute can have small bits that stick out occasionally, but the cotton threads can be pulled back through from the back to repair any snags, so fixes are easy.

Q: Is it a good neutral color?

A: Yes. The rug blends ivory and tan for a versatile neutral that pairs well with many styles. It’s available in other colors as well.

Q: Does it shed or have any odor?

A: It hasn’t shed for us, and it doesn’t have the strong natural-fiber scent that some rugs do.

Details on the rug: This handmade farmhouse-style area rug features a simple woven pattern with a slightly faded, lived-in look. Flatwoven in India from a jute and cotton blend, its crisp beige tone complements coastal and neutral interiors. The rug’s approximate 0.25″ pile height provides enough padding for comfort while remaining durable for high-traffic areas. For safety and added comfort, we recommend using a rug pad underneath.
