Stylish Kitchen Storage: Rattan Lidded Baskets for Organized Counters

This year I’m continuing my mission to give everything a proper home and keep surfaces clear. Recently I added a few new baskets to help organize and style our kitchen, and I wanted to share what’s working for us.

My goal with these baskets is twofold: add cozy texture to the shelves and counters, and solve small organization problems with an attractive, practical solution.

I’m not trying to hide things we don’t need. Instead, I’m using baskets to corral items we use often but that tend to get left out. One small oval basket, for example, now holds our dog Lily’s supplements so they’re no longer piled on the counter.

I also added three round lidded baskets to the island shelves, and I absolutely love them. Most of my baskets are rectangular, so these round shapes add variety and visual interest.

The round baskets are stackable. I chose two smaller ones for a single shelf and one larger basket that fits dinner plates—perfect for tucking away pieces we only use occasionally. They blend function and beauty, which is exactly what I wanted.

Each smaller basket has a dedicated purpose so I don’t forget what’s inside. I can always repurpose them later, but for now they’re proving very useful.

One round basket is my picture-hanging basket. It contains the small tools I use frequently for hanging plates and frames—sticky tack, measuring tape, hooks, nails—and I plan to add plate hangers, a small level, and a compact hammer. Keeping these supplies together makes quick tasks easier.

The other small basket holds tools and extras. I’ve wanted a mini “extra junk-drawer” near the island for a while, and a basket is ideal. It stores handy tools we use in the kitchen and a few extension cords for when family brings small appliances. Having these items within reach saves trips to the garage and keeps the main island drawer from becoming overloaded.

Keeping organization systems near the places they’re used makes daily life smoother. Moving some necessities out of the slim junk drawer frees up space there for paper, pens, and other quick-access items.
