Kitchens: Subway Tile & Two-Toned Cabinets
I love subway tile. It’s a timeless choice—elegant, versatile, and often budget-friendly. I especially adore subway tile that runs from counter to ceiling or floor to ceiling; a full wall of tile creates a striking focal point and adds texture and character to a kitchen.

White subway tile is especially beautiful when paired with soft colors, wood tones, or textured accents that lend warmth and contrast. While some homeowners prefer white grout for a crisp, modern finish, I like a narrow grout line in a gentle gray or taupe for subtle definition without harsh contrast.

House and Home
If you follow this blog, you might have guessed it—subway tile will be part of my kitchen makeover. I considered many backsplash options, but classic white subway tile won out. It complements my highly grained, multi-toned hickory floors and helps balance the kitchen’s visual warmth.

Apartment Therapy
I’m excited because subway tile will bring texture and personality while brightening the entire space. It’s a simple change that makes a big impact, opening up the room and reflecting light beautifully.

Better Homes & Gardens
You may have noticed another recurring element in these kitchens: two-toned cabinets. Mixing cabinetry finishes remains a popular and attractive approach when applied thoughtfully. I’ve always liked the layered look it creates—suggesting a collected-over-time aesthetic that feels lived-in and curated. In a previous kitchen I combined wood and white cabinets, and it added depth and interest.
I plan to include a two-tone element in my updated kitchen as well, though my primary cabinet color won’t be white this time. I’ll share more about my choices and an inspiration board soon.
Happy Monday everyone!
