Transforming a Square Door into an Arch: Before and After Photos

Back when we planned our kitchen remodel, our goal was to add as much character as possible within the existing footprint. We weren’t opening walls or adding square footage, so every change had to work inside the current structure.

One simple decision made a big impact: softening two small doorways into arched openings. Changing those squared openings to gentle arches added cottage charm and made the kitchen feel more intentional and finished.

Our narrow galley kitchen originally had three doorways. In such a compact space that could be awkward, but each opening served a purpose, so we kept them. Because there were so many passageways, we wanted them to be a deliberate design feature rather than just functional gaps in the wall.

The two interior openings weren’t unattractive to begin with, they just lacked personality. Since we couldn’t enlarge them, altering the shape was the best way to give the space more character.

Because our home overlooks Puget Sound, we wanted a coastal cottage vibe. A couple of simple arched doorways felt like the perfect fit. Those arches are echoed elsewhere in the house—our round kitchen window, the molding on interior doors and even outdoor gates—so the change felt cohesive.

The exterior door we updated went from feeling boxy—almost like a jail door—to warm and welcoming once we transformed it into a Dutch-style door with softer lines. That small change made the doorway feel friendly and gave the kitchen a more relaxed, cottage-like personality.

We also removed an unnecessary door between the kitchen and the hall. That door had made the narrow hall feel cramped; taking it out opened the flow and allowed the new arch to provide visual interest without crowding the space. The gentle curve at the top of the opening gives the transition between rooms more shape and charm.

The arched openings transformed the look and feel of the kitchen, dining room and hallway. For a relatively small investment, the change added interest, warmth and a sense of height—especially welcome in rooms with modest ceiling heights. The result feels more inviting and intentional.

Of course, some homeowners prefer square doorways, and that choice works beautifully for many styles. But if you love arched doorways and wish you had them, it’s reassuring to know they can be added to an existing home without tearing everything down.
