We’ve had an unusually cold winter here in the Northwest, with snow and ice more than usual, especially in my hometown of Portland. If you live somewhere cold too, you know how the weather makes you want to stay inside and make your home as cozy as possible.
I’m settling into my new kitchen and loving having a space that’s truly mine again. The contractor tells me the last trim and paint are almost finished, so I’m very close to inviting you over for coffee or tea and giving you a full tour of our new kitchen. I promise I’ll share it soon.
Our kitchen is a galley layout, so we didn’t have a lot of open space to work with. It’s simple and on the smaller side, but we’ve focused on making it feel like home. A kitchen’s size, style, or materials aren’t the only things that shape how it feels. Even more important is the warmth, joy and daily rituals you bring into the room to make it comforting and well-loved.

I enjoy puttering in the kitchen—making coffee, cleaning up, baking treats, chatting with friends while I cook, and finding small ways to make this room feel welcoming for our family. Those everyday moments are what turn a practical space into a place of memories.
While tidying after dinner the other night, I started planning the next post in our mini-series about Hygge—the Danish idea of creating coziness and comfort. How can we make our homes, and especially our kitchens, feel warmer and more inviting this winter? I thought it would be fun to walk through a few simple ideas you can use to add some winter love to your kitchen.
How can you bring warmth and comfort to your kitchen this season? Here are five cozy winter kitchen rituals to try (I’ll share five more in part two):
Bring joy to winter cleaning.
A clean kitchen lifts your spirits on gloomy days and can become a form of self-care. If cleaning feels like a chore, create little winter rituals to make it enjoyable. Light a candle or run a diffuser with fresh, clean scents. Allow yourself a special hot drink only while washing dishes. Play music or listen to a favorite podcast while you work. Even lining up a winter TV series to stream on a laptop set on the counter can make the time pass pleasantly.
Cozy up cold surfaces.
Kitchens with lots of hard surfaces can feel chilly in winter. While clear counters feel fresh, a few intentional layers will warm the space. Add a rug to soften the floor and keep feet warmer. Display a few accessories on counters or shelves—wooden boards, ceramics, or a small bowl of seasonal fruit—to create a more homey, inviting vibe without cluttering the room.

Delight in winter experiences.
Think about favorite kitchen experiences you associate with winter, or create a few new ones. Maybe it’s a pot of soup simmering on the stove, a special breakfast you prepare on weekends, or an afternoon tea ritual. Little upgrades—like a copper French press, a lovely tea kettle, or a winter soup tureen—can make ordinary routines feel celebratory and help you savor the season.
Make room for winter.
Kitchens can accumulate gadgets and dry goods you never use, which makes meal prep frustrating. Use a quiet winter day to declutter pantry shelves, fridge drawers, and high cabinets. Discard expired items and set aside things you don’t need. Keep only what you’ll use this season and restock with comforting staples. Clearing space makes cooking and family snacks easier and more enjoyable.
Nourish yourself and your family.
There’s a particular comfort in cooking a warm, healthy meal on a chilly evening. Preparing food for your family boosts mood and well-being more than fast food or takeout. Plan meals in advance to avoid last-minute unhealthy choices and spend a cozy evening with a cookbook or recipe notes to build a winter menu. Cooking with intention is both a practical act and a nurturing ritual.

Tomorrow I’ll share part two of these cozy winter kitchen rituals.
