How to Use Multiple Paint Colors in One Room — Tips from Sarah Richardson

I enjoyed this Sarah Richardson video and thought you might too. It’s inspiring to see creative and unexpected ways to use multiple paint colors and shades within a room or an open-plan home. She also shares practical tips on where to begin.

I’ve been having a lot of fun experimenting with paint, varying colors from room to room and sometimes using several different hues within a single space. My house isn’t strictly open concept, but the main rooms flow into one another without doors, so color transitions matter.

In my open kitchen-family room I’m using four different wall and ceiling paint colors in addition to the kitchen cabinet color, so the space shows five distinct layers of color. Look through the opening to the dining room and you’ll spot a sixth color.

The photo above gives a glimpse of how I’ve divided color areas in the family room. I’ll share a full post about those updates soon; I haven’t detailed those particular changes here yet.

In an era when many people paint everything white, using multiple colors can feel bold or unexpected. I love that Sarah Richardson and I both embrace layered color — it’s playful and personal. If that’s a little eccentric, at least I’m in good company.

PS — I will create a post listing the paint colors I used in my house. I get asked about those colors almost every day, and I promise I’ll publish that post soon. I want to be sure I get the names and locations right and include clear photos showing where each color is used, since there are several subtle variations throughout the home.

Full disclosure: I’m known for changing my mind while testing colors and for sometimes mixing up color names by the time I’m finished. I want the paint color post to be accurate so I don’t mislead anyone.

Enjoy the video!
