Does your home have curb appeal? This year I focused mostly on indoor projects, so the exterior improvements I hoped to make had to wait. Still, improving curb appeal is high on my list when time and budget allow.
We did install a new backyard fence, mainly for our son Jack’s safety and enjoyment this summer. Even though it’s a simple, practical fence, it opened my imagination for what the yard could become. Small changes often spark bigger ideas — you have to start somewhere.
House & Home
Late summer and early fall are ideal for outdoor projects. In the Pacific Northwest, autumn often offers beautiful weather well into October, so there’s usually time to tackle exterior updates. I’m still hoping to finally paint that front door — it’s on my to-do list and I haven’t given up yet.
Below are nine curb appeal ideas I’m inspired by — maybe they’ll be on your wish list too.

1. Window boxes
Window boxes add instant charm and color to a facade. They’re great for seasonal plantings and can be tailored to your home’s style — from classic blooms to cascading greenery.
2. Lanterns
Outdoor lanterns define entryways and add warm, welcoming light. Choose fixtures that complement your architectural style and consider layered lighting for both aesthetics and safety.

3. Trellises
Trellises create vertical interest and provide support for climbing plants. They can frame doors, windows, or garden paths and help soften hard surfaces with foliage and flowers.
4. Cottage-style plants and picket fencing
A cottage planting scheme paired with a picket fence creates a timeless, inviting look. Mix herbs, perennials, and simple annuals for a relaxed, lived-in garden feel that’s low fuss but high impact.

5. Secret garden entrance
A hidden gate or tucked-away doorway adds mystery and charm. A framed entrance with climbing vines or a narrow, inviting path can transform a yard into a cozy retreat.

6, 7 & 8. Front gate, hedge and awning
A front gate provides definition and a sense of arrival, while hedges establish structure and privacy. An awning or porch cover offers shelter and architectural interest — together these elements make an entrance feel intentional and welcoming.

9. Garage door spruce up
The garage door covers a large portion of a home’s front elevation, so updating it can dramatically change the look of your house. Fresh paint, new hardware, or a carriage-style door can add style and increase curb appeal without a full renovation.
