Before we move on from the kitchen focus in our Best of the Best Room Makeover summer series and shift (for a while) to pretty bedrooms — we’ll return to kitchens later because there’s still more to share — I wanted to highlight how powerful a simple paint update can be.
While it’s inspiring to plan big, dramatic kitchen transformations, modest makeovers can be just as satisfying. A change that costs less and takes less time, yet significantly improves the look and feel of a space, is often the best kind of update. That thinking guided me when we considered what to do with our little 1950s kitchen. Before committing to a full remodel, I wanted to make sure we explored smaller options that might deliver big visual improvement.
One idea kept coming back to me: never underestimate the power of paint. Although we ultimately decided to move forward with a full kitchen redo sooner rather than later (I’m excited to share more about that project), I was curious what a quick paint change could do to soften the bold red wall and tone down the very oak cabinetry.
Paint Red Wall to White
When a reader suggested showing an “in-between makeover,” it felt like the perfect experiment. I was genuinely curious how much a can of white paint could change this corner. Color and wood are beautiful when they work together, but in this small kitchen that cluster of red, yellow and oak felt visually busy to me. Painting just this section promised a calmer, more cohesive look without a full renovation.
For this quick update I chose Glidden Complete, a stain-blocking paint and primer in one. It covered the red wall and oak cabinetry easily, dried quickly, and gave the space a fresh, unified appearance. I didn’t want to tackle the entire kitchen that day, but painting this portion made a noticeable difference: the area feels cleaner, brighter and much more restful.

Below you can see the transformation in the before and after photos. A relatively small effort produced a major visual improvement — the kind of update that makes a room feel renewed without a full gut job.

Now I can breathe easier in the kitchen. The simplified palette creates a calmer atmosphere and feels more modern while still honoring the room’s original charm. If our full remodel were delayed, painting the whole kitchen would be an appealing option because it truly makes such a dramatic difference.
The power of paint is remarkable. If a kitchen, room or piece of furniture isn’t quite what you want, paint is often the quickest, most affordable first step toward the look you love.
