One of the best updates we made to our Seattle home five years ago was adding a Trex deck to the backyard. We have absolutely no regrets. I’m happy to share our experience with Trex and how this project transformed our outdoor space.
Before the deck, our yard had an old, cracked concrete patio that felt uninspiring. It was unattractive and even a bit unsafe, so we rarely used that area. Replacing it felt overwhelming until we discovered that Trex decking can be installed directly over existing concrete — a true game changer.
Being able to install decking over the concrete meant the project was simpler and less disruptive than we expected.

The new deck changed how we used our backyard. It became a natural extension of our living and dining spaces and quickly turned into the favorite spot for family gatherings. The finished deck felt inviting and made outdoor living effortless.

How to start a deck project
A deck project can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. We worked with Lowe’s to design and install our Trex deck, and their guidance made the process smooth and straightforward. If you prefer to DIY, there are many helpful resources and planning tools online to guide you through design, materials, and installation.
Our deck was completed quickly and we were able to use it right away. It was fun and easy to add furniture and plants and create a comfortable outdoor living area.

Designing a Trex deck for your yard and lifestyle
What we loved most was how the deck design connected new and existing outdoor elements. We installed the same Trex railing system on the deck and along our concrete steps, creating a cohesive look between the house and yard. The cohesive railings made transitions from the kitchen to the yard feel intentional and visually pleasing.
The railings also defined the deck as its own outdoor room while still allowing open sightlines to the lawn and garden. We had room for both large gatherings and cozy seating areas for morning coffee. Thoughtful deck design can enhance how you use your yard and enrich daily life.

Durability of Trex composite deck and railings
Durability was a major reason we chose Trex composite decking and railings. After years of use in the Pacific Northwest, our deck consistently exceeded expectations. Traditional wood decks require ongoing maintenance—painting, staining, and repairing warps or splinters—but Trex held up beautifully with minimal upkeep.
The composite material stayed clean easily and showed no warping, chipping, or splintering. That low-maintenance performance meant more time enjoying the deck—planting, dining, and hosting—rather than spending weekends on repairs.

When we sold our home, the deck looked as beautiful as the day it was installed. If you’re considering a Trex deck, now is a great time to start so you can enjoy it for years to come.
We miss that deck and the memories made there, and we plan to add another deck at our new home. Keep an eye out for updates on our kitchen, tiny cottage renovation, and future backyard plans.
