I had a small crisis a few months ago. I’m over it now, but it reminded me how easy it is to feel overwhelmed when you’re starting something new—like decorating a new-to-you house. Decorating can feel intimidating. You worry about making the right choices and finding your own voice.

I’ve had many of these moments. I’ve moved through different homes and styles, and early on in my blogging life I went through a “what am I?” phase. Back when blogs were new, I thought there were three types of home bloggers: creative, homemaking, and design. That’s how it looked to me as a beginner.

In reality, those categories weren’t so rigid. I didn’t have a map, so I made one up as I went. Some days I leaned toward homemaking, other days toward design, and sometimes I dabbled in craft projects that felt more experimental than polished. Most of the time I simply did what I loved. I didn’t always know the right path, but I kept going.

Confidence didn’t arrive overnight. I still don’t feel confident in everything I do, and that’s okay. The important realization is this: people who are creating something new rarely know every step in advance. Most of us are figuring it out as we go. We experiment, we learn, and gradually the pieces fall into place.

Trying new things often means making mistakes and discovering what works through experience. Some people have natural instincts or training that give them a head start, but perseverance matters just as much. If you want to be confident about a specific outcome you usually need to have done that exact thing before; otherwise you’ll move forward with some trial and error.

Every new project can feel risky—decorating a new room, tackling a different budget, writing a new book, or taking on another big responsibility. I worry I might fail or embarrass myself. But then I remind myself of what I already know and of the simple truths that guide me forward.

10 Things I Know for Sure

  1. A brave no can be as powerful as a cautious yes.
  2. I don’t have to follow what’s expected; freedom removes a lot of guesswork.
  3. Worry is only useful when it protects against truly catastrophic mistakes.
  4. I can ask for advice and learn from others; I don’t have to do it alone.
  5. Past lessons and experiences are valuable and transferable.
  6. Constructive criticism helps me grow; negative judgment doesn’t define me.
  7. There will always be people better at certain things, but there is only one me.
  8. My goals and creative impulses are worth pursuing, even if I can’t make them perfect immediately.
  9. I can find my own way through trial and error and still create something meaningful.
  10. I’ll either love the result, be proud of my effort, or learn enough to do better next time.

Those ten points are my anchor when I step into new territory. They’re reminders that trying something unfamiliar will make you wiser or braver—or both.

If you’re willing to try something new, you’ll come away a little wiser, a little braver, or both.

🙂

True Confession: This post began as “Inspired By: A Modern Coastal Island Style,” but while working on it I found myself writing about something else entirely—blogging, decorating, trying new things, and the small leaps that lead to growth. That’s the messy, honest part of creating: sometimes the process leads you in unexpected directions.
